What are the symptoms of cancer?

Cancer is a disease state when cells of the body grow uncontrollably and unconditionally. It may start anywhere in the body. It may begin in a cell/tissue or body part and remain in that specific region or may spread to the surroundings or remote part of the body.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. It’s not infectious but life-threatening. You will be surprised to know how cancer is spreading day by day. The number is just alarming. Our way of life may be greatly responsible for this. 70% of cancer deaths occur in low— and middle-income countries.

The signs and symptoms of cancer depend on the location of the tumor, its size, and how much cancer spreads in the body. Fever, tiredness, and weight loss are very common signs and symptoms of cancer. But these are very often caused by illness or injury. If anyone suffering from these and those do not go away after a certain time or may worsen, you should consult with a doctor to make sure whether these are due to cancer or any other diseases.

Signs and symptoms of cancer are-

  • Fatigue
  • Tiredness that doesn't go away after taking a rest
  • Weight loss or weight gain without any reason
  • Persistent cough or presence of blood in your cough
  • Hoarseness
  • Changes in breasts like changes in size and shape, nipple changes or discharge, a lump in your breast or underarm, red, itchy, scaly skin, and skin thickening
  • Pain with no known reason doesn’t go away or worsens with time
  • Swelling or formation of lumps
  • Mouth ulcer
  • Fever
  • Frequent sweating during night sleep
  • Troublesome breathing
  • Unexplained bleeding from any part of the body
  • Changes in bladder-like traces of blood in urine, feeling pain during urination, and difficulties in urination
  • Changes in the bowel, like traces of blood in stool, and changes in bowel habits (like constipation or diarrhea)
  • Problems with eating, like heartburn or indigestion after eating, which doesn’t go away; difficulties in swallowing; changes in appetite (like loss of appetite); nausea; vomiting; and pain in the belly
  • Changes in the mouth, like a white or red patch on the tongue, bleeding from the lip, and numbness
  • Changes in the skin, like the formation of a lump that bleeds, scaly patches, a new mole or changes in the existing mole, a sore that is not recovered, and yellowing skin
  • Vaginal bleeding with no known reason
  • Neurological problems like changes in vision, headache, seizures, and changes in hearing

These are the key signs and symptoms of cancer. Symptoms vary from person to person. The signs and symptoms can be seen in some patients and not in some other patients. The chance of developing cancer increases with age.

Most cases are found in people in their 50s or more. If you find any changes that are new and seem unusual and don't go away, you should immediately consult with a health professional.

People are encouraged to do a screening test (a screening test is done in a healthy condition where there are no symptoms of cancer in your body). This is used for early detection if there is any precancerous condition in your body. Early detection and treatment can give you a better life ahead.
